The D-Learning system

Nowadays, you no longer need to sit in a classroom to learn the theory for a (diving) course.

IAHD courses use the 'Digital Learning System' (D-Learning) developed specifically for IAHD, allowing you to master the theory 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, at your own pace and in your own time.

How does D-Learning work?

After registering for an IAHD course, you will receive a training package. At the same time, your instructor will activate the course for you in the D-Learning system. Here, you can study the theory part at your own pace and convenience, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

D-Learning gives you the opportunity to study flexibly, in your own time and in your own way. You can immediately check your knowledge through digital knowledge tests. If you have questions, you can consult the instructor via email or, of course, at the IAHD dive center.

Once you have mastered the theory, you can immediately take the final test with your IAHD dive instructor, after which you can get acquainted with the impressive sensation of breathing underwater and the underwater world.

Thanks to the IAHD 'D-Learning' system, nothing stands in your way to start your diving training and enjoy the wonders of Mother Nature underwater.

Benefits of D-Learning:

Learn whenever it suits you, available online 24 hours a day / 7 days a week;

Opportunity to check your knowledge immediately through digital knowledge tests;

Always the latest and correct version of the theory; Clear explanations of the questions; can't figure it out? Ask your instructor a question online!

Partner level

All the IAHD certificates have a "partner level" on their certificates. This allows almost anyone to go diving on the level that applies in relation to the restriction that that person has.

The IAHD partner level certifications have been developed to ensure that each diver can exercise his or her hobby in the water.

The levels determine with how many divers must be dived so that, in an emergency, everyone may return safe and sound back to the surface.

  • Level 1

This diver has fulfilled ALL theory and practice requirements of level 1, 2, 3 and 4 during the course.

This diver is also able to help itself AND the buddy diver in emergency situations.

  • Level 2

This diver CAN NOT fulfil the theory and/or practice requirements of level 1.

This diver has fulfilled ALL theory and practice requirements of level 2, 3 and 4 during the course.

This diver IS ABLE to help himself in emergency situations.

This diver is NOT ABLE to help the buddy diver in emergency situations.

  • Level 3

This diver CAN NOT fulfil the theory and/or practice requirements of level 1 and 2.

This diver has fulfilled ALL theory and practice requirements of level 3 and 4 during the course.

This diver is NOT ABLE to help himself or the buddy diver in emergency situations.

  • Level 4

This diver CAN NOT fulfil the theory and/or practice requirements of level 1, 2 and 3.

This diver shows that he/she CAN HANDLE scuba equipment in a normal way (level 4).

This diver is NOT ABLE to help himself or the buddy diver in emergency situations.

  • Number of buddy divers:

1 buddy diver with at least the 'Autonomous Diver' certificate or an equivalent.

  • Number of buddy divers:

    2 buddy divers.

1 buddy diver must have at least the 'Autonomous Diver' certificate (OWD) or an equivalent with a minimum of 10 registrated dives.

1 buddy diver must have at least the 'Dive Partner' certificate or an equivalent.

  • Number of buddy divers:

    3 buddy divers.

2 buddy divers must have at least the 'Autonomous Diver' certificate (OWD) or an equivalent with a minimum of 10 registrated dives.

1 buddy diver must have at least the 'Instructor Assistant' certificate or an equivalent.

  • Number of buddy divers:

1 buddy diver with at least the 'Dive Partner' certificate or an equivalent.

In addition, there should be a certified IAHD instructor in active status or an equivalent in the water and in direct control of the partner level 4 diver.

The partner level 4 diver is only allowed to dive in a controlled confined water area or in a swimming pool.

Follow an IAHD course

Almost everyone can follow an IAHD course, whether you're a person with no disability or with a physical or mental disability.
[arrow-down]
  • Step 1: May I dive?

Because people with a disability often have a medical history, it is necessary to comply with the so-called "3 x YES" rule:

    1. Do you want to follow a dive course? During the course the student's initiative is expected. If you put effort and energy in this new hobby, then various objectives can be achieved.

    2. Does your doctor give approval? Before we go in the water, we want to ensure that you have no restrictions on medical grounds.

    3. Would your IAHD instructor train you? Not every IAHD scuba instructor master the knowledge and skills to cope with your restriction. Therefore, it may be that he/she refers you to another IAHD scuba instructor who has more knowledge and skills for your condition.

If all three questions can be answered with a YES, then nothing stands you in your way to do a dive course and to enjoy the freedom under water.

  • Step 2: Learning theory
To be able to dive safely, knowledge about the equipment you are going to use and the skills you will need under water are neccessary.

You can make the theoretical knowledge your own in different ways:

    • By self-studying through the for IAHD developed online D-Learning program, in your own time and at your own pace
    • By theoretical lessons with an IAHD instructor;
    • By using a combination of the above. The modules that are not understood by self-study, can still be given by the IAHD instructor.

Of course, the level of knowledge is adapted to the possibilities of you as a student.
  • Step 3: Practice lessons
Of course, scuba diving is done in the water. After you have acquired the necessary knowledge, you are going to take this into practice.

Depending on the course you start first in a pool or in a confined part of the open water.

At the moment that you have built up more experience, you will make all dives in the open water. During every course you will first have to demonstrate some of the skills involved in the course.

After that, you will use these skills during the 'free' dives. Depending on the restriction, the diver will be accompanied by one or more other divers. This is called the "Partner level".
